PETER SYMONDS COLLEGE | STUDENT SERVICES

STUDENT SERVICES

Students outside the Paul Woodhouse CentreStudent Services is based in the Paul Woodhouse Centre near the Common Room and is the first port of call for students needing all kinds of information. Staff are available from 8.30am to 5pm to help with general enquiries about such matters as transport, lockers, ID cards, car parking on campus, exam timetables. It is also a point of contact if First Aid is required.

As well as routine enquiries, Student Services can help with more serious welfare issues such as financial hardship and housing problems. It is also the place to come if you need to book an appointment with the College Counsellor.

Student Services is the focus of much of the student enterprise at Peter Symonds. The College has supported many charities including Children in Need, World AIDS Day, The Jubilee Sailing Trust, Comic Relief and The Leukaemia Research Fund. Current college charities include Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Shelter, Oxfam and Operation Christmas Child.

Peter Symonds students have a reputation for being enthusiastic fundraisers and during 2000-2001 they raised over £8000 by holding parties, sponsored events, and taking collections.

Counselling

Confidential counselling is available to all students. Our trained counsellors are willing to see students on any matter, whether related to College life or to issues outside college. Often, some quiet time and a listening ear are all that is needed to help students resolve their problems. Counsellors from Face to Face, the young people's counselling service in Winchester, are also around during the year, helping with campaigns and awareness days, and there is always a quiet moment to have a chat with one of them.

Student Union

Student fundraising activities

The Student Union is the collective body of all students at Peter Symonds College. Each Spring, students have an opportunity to stand for election to one of positions on the Executive Committee, such as President, Vice President, Treasurer or Secretary. The committee is then responsible for organising student events, which have included a Battle of the Bands, paintballing, health awareness campaigns and many parties with all the proceeds going to charity. The Student Union is the voice of the student body and the President is a college governor. It is affiliated to the National Union of Students (NUS) and because of this you will receive the nationally recognised NUS card which entitles you to discount at shops, cinemas and theatres. Membership of the Student Union is completely voluntary.

Student Community Action

Peter Symonds College is very proud of the active role its students take as volunteers in the local community. The Community Action Group is co-ordinated through Student Services and students can volunteer in various ways working with local schools, hospitals, playgroups, residences for the elderly or conservation projects. We have links with many organisations including SNAPS and The Winchester Live at Home Scheme. During the year a programme of meetings is organised to which guest speakers from local charities and groups are invited and all students are welcome to attend. Students can join the Community Action Group as part of their activity programme. More information is available at Student Services.
